Miss Bentley has spent April at a villa on Lake Como for 16 years. It's 1937 and the only other English-speaking guests are brash Americans. Major Wilshaw arrives and invites her to cocktails but she stands him up. Then a bored Miss Beaumont flirts with the major and Miss Bentley realises she rather likes him.
